Wow, it's been over a month since I've posted anything. That needs to change.
Lately I've been doing a lot of practice inking. Taking someone else's pencil drawings and adding ink and maybe tones or colors.

I did this one as a redesign for the Ten Ton Challenge. It was kinda fun. Not much of a redesign though. I mean c'mon - made him bald, lost the headband and yellow shirt and added the tatoos. meh. We'll see how it does.

Ten Ton Rock

Here's a pic I did of Sgt. Rock For the Ten Ton Challenge. It's done a little looser than what I normally do and I'm not quite sure I'm happy with it.

Here's the rough sketch. I drew it on one of those medium sized Post-Its and then blew it up with a photocopier. Then it gets traced off onto good paper and inked.

The Non-Metal Church - Oingo Boingo

OK, I'm deviating from the Metal theme this week because I watched an Oingo Boingo video and was totally inspired.

Now here's this week's caricature. It's one of Danny Elfman, lead singer of Oingo Boingo and composer of the soundtracks below. I left one version black and white and added color to the other. Let me know what you think.

This week's Metal Church features the band Rammstein (one of my current favorites) and a caricature of their keyboard player Christian "Flake" Lorenz.
Flake always seems to be the whipping boy for the band so I picked the video Seemann because it shows Flake in all his glory. Enjoy.

Fandamonium (A local comic/sci-fi/anime convension)asked me to draw a poster for their upcoming dance and this is what I came up with. It's pretty fun I think.
Unfortunately, After I drew it they announced the theme would have to do with fairy tales. I don't have time for another soooooo here's some fairy tale robots, I guess.

Metal Church : Black Sabbath

This week's Metal Church sermon is by Black Sabbath and their song Heaven and Hell. Sabbath has had several lead singers and various band members but one thing has always stayed the same - lead guitar by Tony Iommi. HE is the sound of Black Sabbath. Check 'em out:

This is Dan Brereton's character Giantkiller - sort of. I did this for the sketch challenge and I went really cartoony and made him into a little monster kid. This is another Illustration Friday piece. This week's subject is "Tattoo". It was a challenge to somehow apply that to children's art but I think this worked good.

This is the first one I've gotten done by the end of Friday! I drew it at lunch, tightened up the inks when I got home and colored it in Photoshop. I tried some subdued colors this time.

APA-5 The World's Greatest APA

I've been a member of APA-5 for a really long time. Since the mid 90's I think.

So, what's an APA-5? It's a group of creators who put together monthly zines, send them out, critique each others work and do it all over again every month. OK, that's a crappy description but that's what you get. To really understand how it works follow the link on my blog page and it will tell you more.

One of the coolest things about it is it was the artistic birthplace of some of comics greatest creators. Frank Miller (Sin City), Mike Richardson (Dark Horse publisher), Randy Stradley (Dark Horse), Paul Chadwick (Concrete), Mark Verheiden (Time Cop), Chris Warner (Black Cross), Robin Ator (The Tick), and Steve Hess (PJ's) are just a few of the famous former "fivers".

When I first joined (I've been a member three different times) it was very underground and somewhat subversive, then it went through a superhero faze and now it's an eclectic mix of all sorts of things.

My digital colors suck...

Well, the project I'm currently working on is calling for me to do some coloring. Problem is, I feel like my coloring skills suck and this scares the heck out of me. I want to do a good job as this is a stellar project and should be seen by some mighty influential people.

So I went to Barnes and Noble today and picked up this book:

It's awesome. Very well written and helpful. Not overly technical. I haven't jumped into the lettering section yet but give me time.

I can see what I was doing wrong in some of my earlier attempts. The following drawing is oversaturated, overworked, Overrendered and there are anti alias problems to boot. ( I know what an anti alias problem is now. I could see the problem but didn't know what to call it.)

Let's see how things improve the coming year.

Christmas Gift

Last night I drew a picture of my dad as a gift for Christmas. I don't normally like to do that because I feel like a cheapskate. For me, drawing is just something I do (sometimes not very well either).

It's natural.

Like pooping.

Who wants poop for Christmas?

My wife (bless her heart) tells me to quit being stupid (not really) and that people like that kind of thing. That it's really personal. I suppose. I love a gift of original art and have some really sweet pieces in my collection but that's different. It's somebody else's, I guess.
OK, this is really what my dad looks like. BIG handlebar mustache. Short. Tough. Hunting bear is about his favorite thing. Wasn't thrilled with the colors. All I had was colored pencil and Sharpie (of course). Let me know what you think.

Thank God it's Friday! This has been a particularly rough week. Not a lot drawn spent most of the week at my day job. I have plans to get a bunch done this weekend but we'll see. There's woodwork to be done and jobs around the house. But, I'm optimistic.

Not too much going on today. Pretty tired tonight might not draw at all. Who knows? Today's pic comes from my sketchbook. It's colored pencil and Sharpie (of course) with a bit of Photoshop blending. Feel free to give comments or crits!

Desktop Doodles

I spend a lot of time at work on the phone with nothing but a ballpoint, Sharpie and some highlighters. This is what happens.

I usually end up filling most of my desk calendar with this stuff. It's always nice to start a new month and have 30 or so little squares to fill!
